What Types of Men are Career Women Choosing and Why?

Career women are realizing that they don’t need a man to support them financially but they would like a partner who is a true friend and can help support their dreams.  These dreams often include having a successful career and family.

As a result, some of these women are choosing men with more traditionally ‘Feminine’ energy.  By this I mean they are great at relationships, communication, expressing their feelings and are willing to be excellent involved dads and provide fun, love, support and romance for their woman.  Although I don’t believe in gender stereotypes, I have called these Venusian men, for the sake of a discussion.

Other times career women choose men as ambitious as they are.  they support one another in their mission and often get outside help to manage the domestic chores.  Many power couples have made this work, albeit with some compromise on both of their parts.  Many relationship experts say there cannot be two egos in a relationship but these couples have learned to both be opinionated and high powered yet to work as a team.  I do believe partners can do this and my book gives many examples of how that gender stereotypical belief about relationships isn’t always true.

What Suggestions Do You Give Mars Women & Venusian Men When They Date?

In my book I tell Mars women to ask questions early on when dating to find out if he will support your dreams and career.  By the same token, a man can watch a woman’s behavior to see if she is playing games, will help pay for things they do or will assert her opinions and who she really is.  These are conversations that singles are afraid to have but they are crucial.  We all may know ahead of time what we are getting.  Maybe this would lower the divorce rate.

Here are some questions she can ask:

-How willing are you to share childcare?

-Would you follow me for a job promotion?

-Do you care if I make more money?

-Would you ever stay home with the kids?

-Do you differ from your family about this and can you maintain your own opinion?

-How might you feel about getting a maid or nanny part-time if you did not want to be home part-time?

Here are some questions he can ask:

-Do you expect me to make more just because I’m a man?

-What if I wanted to stay home with the kids for a period of time?  How would you feel about that?

-Would you succumb to family or societal pressure if we chose to have an equal marriage in these areas?

I don’t expect that this relationship would apply to everyone.  I am sure there are some singles and couples who prefer the traditional gender roles in a romantic relationship.  if this works for them. than great!  I’m just writing this book for a subset of singles that no longer fit that model.

So, you decide.  What do you think?

20 Places Mars Women Can Meet Men:

ONLINE DATING: There are so many online dating sites. They geared towards every age group, interest and characteristic. Search the Internet for choices and sign up for two or three. Some are even free.

CHURCHES/SYNAGOGUES/MOSQUES: Many places of worship have active communities with people who’d be happy to introduce you to other singles. Also, many have singles groups or young professionals groups.

MEET UPS: www.meetup.com is a website where you can join an existing group or start your own. You can choose one in your geographic location and interest. There are also many singles groups that do activities. It’s inexpensive and you can show up as often as you want.

BARS: Bars are a convenient way to go out with a friend and let loose from a busy week. People do meet in bars but you want to look for someone who wants a long-term relationship, not a one-night stand, if that’s your intention for dating.

SINGLES DANCES: There are plenty of singles dances in most places. Check online and in your local newspaper.

SPEED DATING: Speed dating is an event consisting of a number of mini dates. It’s a great way to practice dating and to ensure you will meet a number of candidates. They have a version online now and many big cities offer it in person. You can search your location on the internet with the term “speed dating” to see what’s available.

SINGLES CRUISES: Some cruise lines now offer singles cruises. Some offer it for specific age groups. You can do an internet search to find out what might appeal to you.

SINGLES VACATIONS: Various venues offer singles vacations to exotic locales. You can take your vacation and meet someone too. You can research this to see what’s in your budget.

PARTIES: Most cities offer house parties for singles for a small fee. You can attend one of these or just try to go to more parties and gatherings with your own acquaintances and colleagues. You never know who you’ll meet!

FIX-UPS: Most singles aren’t vocal about what they want. I’d recommend telling your friends and even your hairdresser and drycleaner to fix you up. You never know who you’ll connect with.

DATING SERVICES: There are dating services that claim to be more hands-on in the matching process, then the online dating sites. If you need more hand holding, you can try this. My recommendation would be to check out customer reviews before spending a lot of money though.

MATCHMAKERS: Sometimes matchmakers can be helpful because they have a sense of who belongs together. Sometimes their fees are high so make sure you seek out customer feedback and ask how many matches you will get.

CLASSIFIED ADS: Many people have met through placing a classified in a newspaper. Some people still don’t like using the Internet, so this is a low-tech method of virtual connection.

POLITICAL RALLIES OR CAUSES: It’s easy to meet like-minded people at gatherings for something about which you’re passionate. Examples of this might be peace marches or a democrat candidate’s campaign.

CLASSES: Classes are a great way to expand your life and meet new people. Colleges have adult education and in most of the larger cities in the U.S. there is a Learning Annex center where you can take interesting adult classes. See what’s available in your area.

JOINING YOUNG PROFESSIONAL GROUPS: Young professionals offer mixers and dinner groups in most cities and many of them are single. Do a search to see what’s offered near you and check it out!

MUSEUM FUNDRAISING GROUPS AND GALAS: Most big museums have fundraising groups and a young professionals group that organizes galas. There may be a fee to join but many professional singles have met dating prospects there.

ALUMNI EVENTS: Professionals often attend their alumni events as networking opportunities and many of these people are single. Check out alumni events in your area. You will already have your alma mater in common!

FACEBOOK: Facebook can be a fun way to browse through your friends’ friends and see who is appealing that you don’t know. This can be a calculated way to ask for introductions. If you’re really brazen, you can ask them to become your friend and introduce yourself! Now Facebook has dating groups that you can join too!

VOLUNTEER GROUPS: It’s a great feeling to help others and it’s also a great way to meet like-minded people!

5 Ways to Make Time for Dating as a Mars Woman:

This is a common dilemma for the Mars woman.  Often they are so caught up with work and traveling that they forget to invest time in meeting someone, dating and having a great relationship.  But everything worth having requires work!  Yes, even love.

So, how is it possible to create time to find a relationship and make it grow?

  1.  Be Organized:  Schedule at least a few nights a week to date or to go out and meet people.  “If you build it, he will arrive.”  You need to make love a priority from the start and walk your talk.
  2.  Respond Immediately:  Many busy singles tell me that a guy wrote them on eharmony and they did not write back for two weeks.  What message does this send? By then those men have met someone or they feel that they are not a priority.  Just like with any goal, you need to show up regularly if you want to succeed.
  3. Be Creative to Stay in Touch:  If you have to travel a lot for work than be creative.  Bring your phone or ipad to answer emails on dating sites, send texts, cards and calls to a date to continue your relationship.  Do your part to make that love grow.
  4.  Set Clear Limits On When You Won’t Work:  Decide that you will work till 7PM on weekdays and will be off weekends.  Then dedicate that time to love.  If you want a relationship, you need time for it.  Make this clear to yourself and then let people at work know your limits.
  5.  Consciously Choose Certain Times Not To Discuss Work or Think About It:  If you are very high powered and love your career you probably are used to eating and breathing your work.  Its great you love what you do but it’s also good to have a balanced life and have some fun.  So, put your blackberry away and focus on the date in front of you.  When you notice yourself falling in that same hole, consciously redirect your thoughts to something fun and romance related.  There will be plenty of time to work later.

How the Recession Shifted Gender Roles:

A study shows that the recession in 2008 caused gender role shifts at home which may have expanded the male identity description.  Sometimes tough events can cause us to grow.  Unemployed men whose wives were still working tried to contribute by taking on more domestic responsibilities.  This allowed them to see that they could do it.  Many say that necessity is the Mother of Invention and hard times call on us for greater adaptability.

Might some of these new skills stick?  Might role reversal become more common, even in fruitful economic climates?

Being True to Yourself Leads to Healthy Relationships, Science Says:

A study shows what I’ve been saying all along, that when men and women are true to themselves they behave in more intimate, less destructive ways with their partner.  They felt their relationship was positive.  They also reported greater personal well being and were more authentic.  So being true to yourself leads to healthy relationships, science says so. (No more ‘The Rules’ ladies and gentlemen!)
